What You Should Do If You Suspect Elder Abuse or Neglect

If you are a senior or elderly person and you believe you are in imminent danger, call 9-1-1 as soon as it’s safe to do so. Leaving the situation without an escort may not be safe so seek assistance from someone that you trust and ensure that you have a thorough safety plan.

Talk to someone that you trust about what is going on in your life. Tell a friend, family member, social worker, family doctor, nurse, or anyone close to you.

Write down and track details of the possible abuse in a journal but keep this in a place that is hidden. Track dates, times, locations, and if any witnesses were present at the time of the incident. All of this information will help anyone who may assist you later on when needed.

Consultation with a lawyer may be useful at this time to find out what your legal options are. Any and all forms of abuse are wrong and not okay. There are some types of abuse that are illegal. Discussing your possible options with a lawyer may be advantageous.

It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself for the abuse and reach out for help. No one deserves to be abused. You have the right to live your life safely, with self-determination, respect, and dignity.
